On July 4, 2007, after exactly 50 years, the new Fiat 500 made its debut in Turin, and will be marketed immediately after the launch. Derived from the '3+1' concept car presented at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show and designed by the Fiat Style Centre, the new 500 is a compact '3-door' model with dimensions of just 355 centimetres long, 163 cm wide, 149 cm tall and with a wheelbase of 230 centimetres. The new model comes with a choice of three engines: two petrol units, the 69 bhp 1.2 and the 100 bhp 1.4 and the 75 bhp 1.3 16v Multijet with DPF, which is equipped with a particulate trap (PDF) as standard equipment. The Fiat 500 can be fitted with up to 7 airbags as standard equipment (two at the front, two curtain-bags, two sidebags and one to protect the knees), and offers a range of safety equipment from ABS complete with EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution), to the sophisticated ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and ASR (Anti Slip Regulation) or HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assistance) which steps in for emergency stops.

We live in a mobile home in a small town, but once the warm weather hits we escape to the cottage, which is 3.5 hours away. It's on a quiet farm-road; not much vehicle traffic but lots of cows! I built this myself from May-November 1994 and May-October 1995. I hired someone to pour the cement floor and put on the roof; otherwise, I did the rest of the work myself. I slept in one tent and cooked my meals in another. This construction method is called stackwall or cordwood. The walls are 12" thick, with a 4" outside mortar wall (sand, lime, cement), a 4" airspace filled with wood shavings and lime (insulation and bug-repellent) and a 4" inside mortar wall. I got the idea from Harrowsmith magazine, and took a weekend course in Plattsburg NY to learn how to construct the building. As long as you don't factor in your own time, a building like this costs a LOT less to construct than a regular building. And it's very, very quiet inside.
