In 1932-33 less than twenty years after Ukraine was forcibly incorporated into the Soviet Union, as a result of a collectivization campaign initiated under Soviet leader Josef Stalin, the brutal Communist regime embarked on a campaign to exterminate the Ukrainian people. It was a direct result of a Soviet policy to crush the nationally conscious Ukrainian people, who fervently resisted collectivization and supported the independence of the Ukraine from the Soviet Union. Stalin confiscated all the grain produced by Ukrainian farmers, withheld other foodstuffs, executed anyone trying to obtain food and punished those who attempted to flee. The result in the land called the breadbasket of Europe: millions of men, women and children were starved to death. This horrendous act of genocide against the Ukrainian people is known as the Holodomor. On Sunday, November 23, 2008, Ukrainians around the world observed the 75th anniversary of Holodomor, a man-made famine and genocide that claimed millions of lives in Ukraine in the early 1930s. In 2006, Ukraine acknowledged its history by officially recognizing the Holodomor as genocide. In 2008, Canada followed suit taking the lead among western nations. As a result, survivors, who for so many years shared the truth with no one - fearing reprisals, now speak freely of the terror that reigned in Ukraine in the 1930s. National Holodomor Awareness Week will annually unite all Canadians in remembering the victims and raising awareness of this tragedy.

Mykhailivska Ploshcha, Kyiv, Ukraine, Nov. 24, 2007 Today, Ukraine remembers the victims of the Holodomor, Stalin's genocidal famine that collectivized the breadbasket of Europe into the graveyard of 7 to 10 million Ukrainians in 1932/33. The "Light a Candle" remembrance ceremony held at the Holodomor Memorial on Mykhailvska Ploshcha (Square) was attended by thousands of Ukrainians. 33 thousand candles — symbolizing the rate at which Ukrainians died every day — were lighted in memory of the victims.
