Kermis is dan ook een verbastering van kerkmis of kerke-misse. Op die dag stroomde het volk samen om de beschermheilige te vereren en om zich te vermaken. In stedelijke gebieden verloor de kermis vaak zijn band met het religieuze feest dat eraan ten grondslag lag, maar in vele dorpen gaan beiden nog hand in hand en gaat er op de wijdingsdag een processie uit. Kermis wordt gedurende enige dagen gevierd en het heeft zich ontwikkeld tot een commercieel evenement. Vroeger was de kermis vaak een van de weinige uitgaansmogelijkheden. Grote kermissen zijn de Brusselse foor, de Brugse Meifoor, de Antwerpse Sinksenfoor, de Tilburgse Kermis, de kermis in Weert, Venray, Nijmegen, Groningen, Oss, Geleen, Kermis Best, Averlo, Roeselare, Kortrijk, Gent, Heerenveen (Pinksterkermis) en Hoorn. De oudste kermissen in Nederland zijn gehouden in Wijk bij Duurstede en vermoedelijk enige tijd later in Utrecht. De eerste vermelding van een kermis aldaar dateert van 26 juni 1023, de dag dat de Sint Maartenskerk werd gewijd. In plaatsen met een oude kermistraditie vinden er rond het kermisgebeuren andere evenementen plaats. Zo vindt in Huissen op de donderdag voorafgaand aan kermis het Vleiskeuren plaats. De lokale slagers geven dan gelegenheid tot het proeven van vlees. Van oorsprong was het vleiskeuren ook gericht op het ontmoeten van jongens en meisjes die dan vervolgens gezamenlijk kermis gaan vieren. Kermis vormt amusement voor jonge mensen die een hoop plezier beleven in wilde attracties zoals spookhuizen, botsauto's enz. Impact on other countries The word Kermesse (generally in the form Kirmess) is applied in the United States to any entertainment, especially one organized in the interest of charity. The word has also influenced the latin american culture. Specifically in Peru, "Kermeses" are held by churches and schools to raise funds. Many activities take place including "tombolas" where people buy tickets for drawings that always have awards from very minor items to bigger awards. The word also entered the Belarusian language as "кiрмаш" (kirmash) in the meaning of "fair". In the Turkish language "kermes" is a sale of ladies' handiwork for charity.
