Live performance in Munich in 1970 by Janet Baker with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Rafael Kubelik. This is just the final 10 minutes of the final part of the Gustav Mahler's work, the whole of which lasts an hour. YouTube widens your horizons. I confess that a few months ago I was not too conversant with Mahler or Kubelik and did not know enough about Janet Baker. A YouTube contact, a professional musician in a major orchestra, introduced me to this recording of this work and its Chinese poetic origins. I don't yet feel qualified to make an intelligent comment on it myself or why I am drawn to it. But I will divulge that in his opinion this could qualify as one of the greatest recorded live performances (conducting, playing, singing, interpreting) of anything by anyone in the last century! I can only wonder how an English lady would have the courage to go to the heart of Germany, the country with some of the greatest musical and poetical traditions of all - and to perform live in THEIR language THEIR most complex music. Oh yes, from what I read, so complex is this work that Mahler himself found that he could not conduct it. Bruno Walter had to do it for him!!

Hubay is one of the many neglected composers who really deserves more attention, I encourage all violinists to include his music in their recitals and recordings. Ive said this before and ill say it again, I can never seem to get enough of the music of Hubay! (the same can be said of Beriot, Viotti aand many others) I hope someday a world class soloist like Repin or Ehnes or Kavakos or Kaler takes the time to record and perform more of the music of the violinist/composers from the last century whose music has been neglected! Around the turn of the century the geatest violinists were Ysaye, Kubelik, Joachim, Sarasate, and Kreisler - this is before Heifetz, Huberman, and Prihoda showed up. Here is a chance to hear the greatness of Kubelik. I have uploaded rare out of print and unreleased recordings that are difficult to find, I hope you like them. Since they are so difficult to find no one should mind me uploading them, if you have issues with me uploading them please send me a message and I will remove them.
