Since moving up to the Canadian men's senior team over two years ago Kevin Lytwyn has been honing in steadily on the goal every competitive gymnast dreams about but only a select few get the chance to live: a trip to compete at the Olympic Games. With the 2012 Summer Games now just over a year and a half away, Lytwyn is tantalizingly close to realizing that dream. But like every gymnast on the national team, he knows that there can be no let up, no stone left unturned in his bid to win a berth on the Olympic team. Kevin, one of several rising stars tagged to fill the void after 2004 Olympic champion Kyle Shewfelt and three other veterans on the Canadian team departed after the 2008 Games, takes every competition as another stepping stone on the road to London. This year's men's Elite Canada competition in Mississauga, Ont., March 18-19, promises to be a showcase for every gymnast with a shot at the Olympics and, an important competition for competitors as young as 12 all the way up to the national senior team. Since his last competition November over three months ago in Stuttgart, Germany, Kevin has been combining his engineering studies at McMaster University in Hamilton with six-day a week training sessions in Burlington, Ont., under the watchful eye of his longtime coach Carlo Pacella. At Elite Canada Kevin plans to unveil a number of new moves, including a difficult tumbling line in his floor routine and a high octane high bar routine sure to send a buzz through the b.../b

TOKYO -- Canada's men's gymnastics team fell short of clinching a 2012 Olympic berth at the 2011world championships on Monday, but will get another chance to qualify for the Games. The six-man Canadian squad had to settle for 12th place in a field of 24 countries in the running for an Olympic berth.
