These are the followers for the Malta Nationalist Party! The Maltese Prime Minister, Leader of the Nationalist Party, Lawrence Gonzi went to Hal Qormi on 9th Feb 2008. He visited only less than 6 or 7 enterprises, and very few supporters greeted him. HOWEVER, what was striking and FUNNY was how these few supporters acted. It was like an animals' meeting. ----------------------------------- TRANSLATION FOR FOREIGNERS OF WHAT IS SAID IN THE VIDEO..... PLESE TRY TO FOLLOW COS SOME OF THE WORDS FROM THE SUPPORTERS DON'T MAKE SENSE AT ALL LOL ;) ------------------------------------ - HEY HEY HEY! - (woman in violet shouting) VIVA OUR GONZI (maltese prime minister) - VIVA OUR PARTY - WELL DONE! - (2 singing) AS LONG AS WE HAVE OUR GONZI, WE ARE UNITED - (reporter) With shouting like "as long as we have our gonzi", was the greeting from a very few NATIONALIST PARTY supporters to Dr Lawrence Gonzi (Leader), who came to visit 6 or 7 shops in Hal Qormi. At Hal Qormi, for unknown reasons, Gonzi didnt visit the traditional local market, even though he was only few meters away from such market (which is set up next to the church). - (woman with glasses on her head) WHAT WE ARE DOING IS ONLY FOR OUR CHILDREN's FUTURE - (young lady with long hair) HE IS WHAT WE NEED AS LEADER, COS HE'S REAL, HE LEADS US, IN OUR FUTURE. - (older lady pointing her hand) AND WE HAVE - (young lady again) WE DONT HAVE TO BE AFRAID, WE aRE NATIONALIST SUPPORTERS, ALL RIGHT? AND WE WANT OUR CITIZENS...CAPABLE - (reporter) At Hal Qormi, Dr Gonzi visited 7 shops. One business man who met the Maltese Prime Minister, stated that he only set up his market stall because he knew that Dr Gonzi was going to visit their village. Otherwise he was not going to open his business. - (aged business man next to Gonzi) "WHEN I GOT TO KNOW THAT OUR LEADER WAS COMING, I DECIDED TO SET UP (his market), BUT IF SOMEONE ELSE WAS GOING TO COME, I WOULD GO ELSEWHERE" - (Gonzi & Man) He HE HE HE ("laughing") - (reporter) Absent from this meeting were the Nationalist Party Ministers, even Louis Galea (the most aged minister in the cabinet) wasnt at Hal Qormi, even though he is related to this village. But with Lawrence Gonzi, there was a group of Nationalist Party supporters, all women, accompanying the PN leader in every business that he visited, with shouting in favour of Gonzi and his party. - (woman shouting) GONZI!!! And in Taiwan, the governing Chinese Nationalist Party celebrated its 114th anniversary. President Ma Ying-jeou displayed confidence despite facing criticism at home. Our correspondent Ben Hedges has the story. The President of Taiwan, or the Republic of China, as it still officially calls itself, is greeting the founder of the Chinese Nationalist Party Sun Yat-sen. The Nationalists once ruled all of China, that is before the communist party won the civil war in 1949. The pomp and ceremony brings back the glory of a bygone age. With events of the last century left behind, the Nationalist Party has a lot to celebrate. In the now Democratic Taiwan, they were voted back into power this year after watching the Democratic Progressive Party hold the reigns since the year 2000. President Ma delivered a confident speech, and despite criticism of Mas government being over friendly with the Chinese communist regime, he did mention that China still posed a serious threat to Taiwan. With recent successes in mind, the Nationalist Party seems to be initiating a recruitment drive. We caught up with Tao Yuan County Mayor, Zhu Li-lun outside the hall [Zhu Li-lun, Tao Yuan County Mayor] At the moment what we hope is that even more young people, even more officials from various places, even more people from different walks of life can come together and participate in working for the Nationalist Party. Yet on the other side of the city, at Liberty Square, this group of young people have different ideas. Known as the wild strawberry movement, they are angry at Mas government for using the police force to disperse protests, prohibit citizens from waving the national flag and play Taiwanese music during the visit of Chinese communist party official Chen Yunlin. They believe the government should apologize for excessive use of force which may have violated Taiwanese law, Eva Shih explains [Eve Shih, Wild strawberry] As the president of the Republic of China and the leader of the cabinet no matter whether employees of his have violated the will of the people or made mistakes, he should take responsibility. Therefore, we want him to apologize and give people justice. The students have now been here for over 388 hours and dont plan on going home anytime soon. Their protest represents a freedom that students in mainland China certainly dont have, and something the Nationalist government claim to be protecting. This is Ben Hedges, NTD, Taipei
