"Notation Animation" A crazed artist attempts to find a new way of applying paint to paper. Produced and Directed by "Quandary"- Spenser Nottage & Matthew Elium Special thanks to: Laura Valladao, because it's not everyone who would be willing to let us paint on them, Laura Timothy, for the boundless enthusiasm and always backing us up, and Greg, for bringing us dinner when we were covered in paint and really needed it. Access full lesson containing this video at: http://www.yourteacher.com/prealgebra/converttoscientificnotation.php Students learn to convert a number from standard notation to scientific notation by first writing a decimal point in the number so that there is only one digit to the left of the decimal point. For example, to write 642,000 in scientific notation, first write the number so that there is only one digit to the left of the decimal point, which in this case is 6.42000. Next, count the number of places that the decimal point must be moved to get back to the original number, which in this case is 5 places. This number will be the exponent on the power of 10. So 642,000 can be written in scientific notation as 6.42 x 10^5. Note that the exponent is positive, because the original number is a whole number. If the original number were a decimal, the exponent would be negative. For example, 0.059 written in standard form is 5.9 x 10^(-2).

Access full lesson containing this video at: http://www.yourteacher.com/algebra1/functionnotation.php Students learn that f(x) = 5x + 1 is an example of function notation, and is read "f of x equals 5x + 1" or "the value of the function at x is 5x + 1". And if f(x) = 5x + 1, then f(2) = 5(2) + 1, or f(2) = 11. Students also learn that f: x arrow 10 -- x is an example of arrow notation, and is read "the function f that pairs x with 10 -- x". Note that arrow notation means the same thing as function notation, so if we're given f: x arrow 10 -- x, then f(-3) = 10 -- (-3) or f(-3) = 13.
