The Yakovlev Yak-36 (NATO reporting name: Freehand) was a Soviet technology demonstrator for a VTOL multi-role combat aircraft. The aircraft had vectored thrust engines, similar to the Harrier. One engine was mounted forward of the cockpit, and one was below the cockpit. The exhaust exited through vectoring nozzles in the center of gravity which were vectorable through about 90º. The Yak-36 made its first hover on 9 January 1963, the first transition from vertical take-off to forward flight ...

During the fly-in day at Brimpton Airfield in Berkshire on 10/May/2009 a Yakovlev Yak-52 (a Russian training plane) gave a 15 minute flying demonstration. The English pilot demonstrated the flying capabilities of the plane with loopings, barrel rolls and other maneuvers. His wife (who is also a pilot) gave a running commentary of the demonstration (you can hear her voice explaining the maneuvers at times during the video). The video only covers parts of the demonstration, I didn't manage to ...

The Yakovlev Yak-38 (NATO reporting name: Forger) was USSR's first and only operational VTOL multi-role combat aircraft. The Yak-38s limited useful payload was always its Achilles heel, but the high ambient temperatures that had been encountered in the Black Sea during the summer 1976 trials frequently prevented the aircraft from carrying any external stores at all, despite a reduced fuel load. Similar problems were then encountered when Minsk sailed off the coast of West Africa and then in ...
