Diving (or simulation - the term used by FIFA) in the context of football (soccer) is an attempt by a player to gain an unfair advantage by diving to the ground and possibly simulating an injury, to appear as if a foul has been committed. Dives are often used to exaggerate the amount of contact present in a challenge. Deciding on whether a player has dived is very subjective, and one of the most controversial aspects of football discussion. Players do this so they can receive free kicks or penalty kicks, which can provide scoring opportunities, or so the opposing player receives a yellow or red card, giving their own team an advantage. Football referees and the governing body FIFA are now trying to prevent diving with more powerful punishments as part of their ongoing target to stop all kinds of simulation in football.[1] The game's rules now state that "Any simulating action anywhere on the field, which is intended to deceive the referee, must be sanctioned as unsporting behaviour" which is misconduct punishable by a yellow card.[2] The rule changes are in response to an increasing trend of diving and simulation. Franny Lee of Manchester City, Derby County and England was one of the first players in English football to get a reputation for diving. In one season he scored 35 goals, 15 of which came from penalties mainly won by him. This inevitably led to accusations of simulation and he was dubbed Lee One Pen or Lee Won Pen. During the 1998 World Cup, in a quarter-final match between Argentina and the Netherlands, Ariel Ortega received a red card for headbutting Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, after van der Sar confronted Ortega on his play-acting attempt to draw a penalty. Ortega had already been cautioned by the referee for diving, but his "head-butt" was really only an intimidating gesture which didn't actually hit Van der Sar but Van Der Sar fell down as if he had been hit.[3][4] A notorious incident of a player not caught simulating until after the match occurred during the Brazil vs Turkey group stage match during the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Rivaldo was about to take a corner when Hakan Ünsal of Turkey kicked the ball at him, as he was annoyed about the time Rivaldo was taking and Turkey wanted to hurry up the game. Rivaldo collapsed dramatically holding his face despite the fact that the ball had hit him on his legs. Ünsal was sent off and Brazil went on to win the match. Rivaldo was fined, but the sanctions were criticised as too lenient. Rivaldo's excuse was "I was thinking in advance, I thought that the ball was going to roll up my body and hit me in the head, therefore I tried to protect myself".[5] Arsenal's Robert Pires was accused of diving when he went down easily to earn his team a penalty against Portsmouth in 2003.[6] Arsenal were 1-0 down and the resulting spot kick earned them a 1-1 draw. In the 2005 UEFA Champions League Final, Steven Gerrard appeared to have gone down easily after Gennaro Gattuso made small contact with him. Liverpool a penalty which Xabi Alonso took and rebounded in after the first shot was saved. This made the scoreboard 3-3 after Liverpool were 3-0 down at half-time to A.C. Milan. Liverpool won 3-2 on penalties. On 5 February 2006, Arjen Robben exaggerated a fall after being shoved in the face by Liverpool goalkeeper José Reina, resulting in Reina being sent off.[7] The incident came moments after Reina had made a clumsy challenge on Eidur Gudjohnsen. July 5th 2006, Thierry Henry went down at the slightest of contact from Portugal defender Ricardo Carvalho to earn France a penalty kick, converted by Zinedine Zidane. France went on to defend their way for the duration of the match and set up their 2nd final appearance in the past three World Cups. O MAIOR ROUBO DA HISTÓRIA DO FUTEBOL Créditos: Felipe Bethonico / Renato Filho Depois da vergonhosa decisão do Campeonato Brasileiro de 1980, Atlético e Flamengo voltaram a se encontrar na Copa Libertadores de 1981. E que o Galo temia aconteceu novamente, uma armação do Flamengo, agora de uma maneira mais descarada. O Grupo 3 da Taça Libertadores 81 foi marcado pelo equilíbrio entre Atlético e Flamengo. As duas equipes terminaram empatadas em primeiro lugar cada uma com 8 pontos ganhos em 6 partidas. Como o regulamento da competição previa que somente o campeão de cada chave passaria a segunda fase, foi necessário a realização de um jogo de desempate em um campo neutro. Depois de muitas negociações, a cidade de Goiânia foi escolhida para sediar o jogo. Tudo era neutro, campo, torcida, cidade mas o juiz não. José Roberto Wright chegou em Goiânia no mesmo avião vindo do Rio de Janeiro, junto com a delegação carioca. Fato estranho, mas que pode ser considerado normal uma vez que ele, Jose Roberto Wrigth residia no Rio. Mas quando ele ficou no mesmo hotel que os flamenguistas os dirigentes do Galo já ficaram desconfiados. Desconfiança que se confirmou logo aos 10 minutos do primeiros tempo. Em uma jogada no meio campo, Reinaldo faz falta normal em Zico e imediatamente Wright mostrou o cartão vermelho para o Rei. O quê que isso? O quê eu fiz? Perguntava o Rei sem demonstrar nenhuma atitude de desrespeito. Na tv, Telê Santana um severo crítico do ante-futebol dizia: "Uma falta que a gente está acostumado a ver no futebol brasileiro -- proclamava Telê, severo nas suas análises sobre a violência no futebol." Logo depois foi a vez de Éder, em outra falta normal o ponteiro esquerda mineiro ganhou o cartão vermelho do juiz. Daí pra frente o serviço já estava feito, o Galo com 9 jogadores em campo seria facilmente vencido pelo Flamengo. O técnico do GALO, Carlos Alberto Silva colocou o time com uma armação claramente defensiva e mesmo com a ajuda do juiz(que em 30 minutos de jogo distribuiu 4 cartões amarelos para os jogadores do GALO, isso fora os 2 cartões vermelhos) o Flamengo não conseguiu marcar seu golzinho. Vendo que a armação ainda não fazia efeito, Wright deu o golpe derradeiro; expulsou Palhinha e Chicão aos 34 minutos do primeiro tempo. Aí não deu para segurar a revolta atleticana. Os dirigentes do GALO entraram em campo. Polícia, Fotógrafos, cinegrafistas todo mundo em campo, uma confusão generalizada. O jogo é paralisado. Nessa hora o "Juiz" expulsa todo o banco de reservas da equipe mineira, jogadores, técnico, comissão técnica e diretoria. Os dirigentes de Minas queriam retirar os seus jogadores de campo.
