The popular and controversial song about the Anglo-Boer War, that has caused a public outcry in South Africa. As the British tried to do a hundred years ago, the black majority government is now trying to suppress the Afrikaner nation's culture - and in fact all traces of their history. Public funding is being withdrawn from Afrikaner monuments, even though Afrikaners contribute more than their share to tax income. Millions are being spent on changing the names of towns, streets etc. while little is done to maintain infrastructure. The new generation of Afrikaners had nothing to do with Apartheid, yet they are faced with a bleak future, suffering under racial discrimination in the form of affirmative action. Although this excludes them from jobs and promotion beyond a certain level, it also stimulates entrepreneurship and innovative thinking. The Afrikaner nation will rise again to take its place in the country their forefathers helped to build and develop. This is for the pride of the Afrikaaner Nation. General De la Rey was a Boer General in South Africa who led his brave boers in battle against the invading British Empire. The odds were staggering 80 000 boers to 350 000 british Soldiers. The Boers held out to the bitter end. The British held thousands of Boer women and children in the first ever concentration camps. The British forced the Boers to surrender as they starved their women and children - only for the Boers to return to their torched farms without many of their murdered family. A Salute to the men who fought for my right to be here in South Africa today. "Ons Vir Jou Suid Africa"

Conclusion of the 2-part video in response to the popular De La Rey song about the Anglo-Boer War, and how South Africans feel about it. The song has helped the Afrikaners to regain some of their pride in their history and culture, and this shows that their identity is stronger than many people thought. When people hear the term "Apartheid" they usually see it as a synonym for racial discrimination. Decades of one-sided reporting has obscured the positive aspects of an idea that originated from the wish to ensure a fair share of the country for all its people, in a way that would prevent domination of one group over the other. In retrospect it is easy to criticise and see where things went wrong. Unfortunately, following the assassination of Verwoerd, there was a lack of clear vision and leadership, resulting in so-called "petty Apartheid" , causing unfair treatment of many black people. However, rather than racial hatred, the motivation was born from fear of total loss of political power - the consequences of which were well known through countless examples from decolonised Africa. On balance, European settlers and their descendants probably did more good than bad in Africa. Improved infrastructure and medical care contributed to the massive increase in the black population of South Africa over the last 100 years.

GENERAL Koos de la Rey has become famous lately in a song, but almost 100 years ago he was also famous . . . when he sped through a police roadblock and was shot and died on a Joburg street. De la Rey, born in 1847 in the Free State, distinguished himself as a Boer general in the 1899-1902 South African War. But it was events some 12 years later that led to his demise. De la Rey has left his mark on the city in several ways. Three roads -- in Morningside, Northcliff, Rivonia -- are named after him; four streets -- in Alberante, Horison, Observatory and Pageview -- honour his memory; and a suburb, Delarey, a small triangle in the west between Maraisburg and Montclare, pays tribute to him. Delarey Street in Monument is probably also named after him

Why did the De la Rey song about the Boer War elicit such a strong response from South Africans, particularly the Afrikaans speaking people? After watching this 2-part video, you may understand. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH Jon Qwelane: Somehow, government leaders always have the temerity to "reassure" overseas countries that everything in South Africa is hunky-dory and all the negative things reported about the country are the work of whiners and disaffected white people hankering after a return of apartheid rule and people unhappy about blacks ruling the country! Corruption in this country is at an all-time high, and anyone who tries to excuse or somehow condone government complicity is simply being dishonest in the extreme. Here is an example of this type of rampant corruption for which there are existing remedies in law, but the trouble is that the police themselves are deeply implicated by their criminal deeds. The Mpumalanga provincial government has just blown R1,45m on a party to celebrate its new 2010 stadium. That is a crying shame, and one more example why the ANC is not the right crowd to rule this country. Contrast this wastefulness with the R300 000 which Durban spent on a similar party for its much bigger stadium and with the very modest R35 000 spent by Cape Town. At any rate, why is there a need to celebrate the construction - not opening - of stadiums?
