Google Tech Talks June, 26 2008 ABSTRACT The Semantic Web presents the vision of a distributed, dynamically growing knowledge base founded on formal logic. Common users, however, seem to have problems even with the simplest Boolean expression. So how can we help users to query a web of logic that they do not seem to understand? One frequently proposed solution to address this problem is the use of natural language (NL) for knowledge specification and querying. We propose to regard formal query languages and NL as two extremes of a continuum, where semistructured languages lie somewhere in the middle. To evaluate what degree of structuredness casual users prefer, we introduce four query interfaces, each at a different point in the continuum, and evaluate the users' preference and their query performance in a study with 48 subjects. The results of the study reveal that while the users dislike the constraints of a fully structured formal query language they also seem at a loss with the freedom of a full NLP approach. This suggests that restricted query languages will be preferred by casual users because of their guidance effect, mirroring findings from social science theory on human activity in general. Speaker: Prof. Bernstein Abraham Bernstein is a full Professor at the Department of Information Technology (Institut für Informatik) of the University of Zurich. He conducts research on various aspects of supporting dynamic (intra- and inter-) organizational processes. His work draws from both social science (organizational psychology/sociology) and technical (computer science, artificial intelligence) foundations. Before coming to Zurich he was an Assistant Professor, at the Information Systems Department in New York University's Stern School of Business, and received a Ph.D. at MIT's Sloan School of Management, where he worked with Prof. Thomas W. This case study features interviews with Whistler's municipal decision makers about the decision making process used to evaluate a new Natural Gas pipeline and the long-term energy needs of the community using the Natural Step Framework, and working with Terasen Gas to evaluate options. Community consultation, co-operation, and partnerships resulted in a successful process. The 2010 Olympics allowed the pipeline to be built at the same time as the road from Vancouver to Whistler. Renewable energy and natural gas provided a blended solution with optimal capital costs, and a flexible platform. Other subjects include Return on Investment (ROI), TNS System Conditions, Environmental Costs, and Technology Innovations.

Amplifies electricity it consumes to produce at least five times more. Can be coupled to power stations that are currently consuming coal,oil,gas,hydo,solar,wind... anything, and amplify the output amount generated by at least five times. Save 80% on greenhouse emissions, save heaps of dollars. Fantastic? can it be real? see it here for yourself. Then badger, harass, pester and insist your local polititians, big busness, power generators, utilities ask that they actually send someone to evaluate the technology. Does anyone really care? we dont see anyone actually coming to evaluate it who has the power to do anything. Please get on to Al Gore, George Bush, Colin Powell, Hillary Clinton, your Prime Minister, except the previous Australian one, who had his head stuck in the cash register counting coal export dollars, maybe Mr Rudd will be different?. Contact your civic leaders, high profile folk like actors and celebrities, anyone else you can think of. We need to help the planet, we can help the planet, but we cant do it alone. Please help us.

This might have been the end of the city, had it not been for the return of a prince, later crowned as Jayavarman VII. After four years of fighting, he succeeded in driving out the Chams, beginning his reign in 1181 as the last great king of Angkor. A fervent Buddhist, unlike his predecessors who worshipped Hindu gods, Jayavarman VII crammed into his 30-year rule the largest building programme ever undertaken. His new city is the surviving Angkor Thorn, centred on the Bayon. He was also responsible for Ta Prohm, Banteay Kdei and Preah Khan, among others, not to mention hundreds of temples, hospitals and other buildings across the empire. This hurried, almost frenzied, building activity is generally considered as the last; but it is difficult to evaluate the part played by Indravarman II in the programme Moreover, Jayavarman VIII, responsible for the destruction of so much Buddhist imagery, tried to restore and improve some important Hindu temples - Angkor Wat, Bapuon and the central plaza of Angkor Thorn. Nothing else has survived at Angkor from later than the early 13th century, partly of course because many of the structures were perishable. After the rise of Theravada Buddhism only wooden temples were made and thus it is difficult to evaluate the wealth of Angkor at this time. The empire continued to prosper - a Chinese emissary, Zhou Daguan, left an intriguing account of the city and its riches in the years 1296-7. After this time, there was increased fighting with the newly-emerged Siamese kingdom. However, other factors may have been more important in its decline. One was the importance of trade for which Phnom Penh and Ayutthaya, the capital of the Siamese state, were much better suited. In the fifteenth century, new rulers emerged on the Mekong River, where modern Phnom Penh now stands. Nevertheless, the kingdom at Angkor endured until the end of the sixteenth century. Why was it so easy for the indigenous people to adopt the gods the Indians had brought with them to Southeast Asia? It may well be imagined that the prosperity of the Indians with their methods was ascribed to divine protection, and that the Khmers and the Chams accordingly began to establish them in their temples. Moreover these foreign gods could readily find a place beside the local deities, as they had already done in India, within what was doubtless a very similar cosmology. Thus particular devotion was accorded to the gods Shiva and Vishnu, and also to the Buddha. Shiva, however, is the dominant figure, as he was long considered by the kings as supreme protector of their empire. It is thus to him that most of the temples are dedicated, and he in turn had to ensure the prosperity of the kingdom. The proliferation of sects which flourished in India does not feature in the land of the Khmers, however. As in other domains, the Khmers were the assiduous pupils of their first masters, and do not seem to have sought to delve deeper into doctrines which perhaps remained somewhat alien to them, nor indeed to dispute them by proposing new ones. It is for this reason that only one or two sects of each of the Shivaite or Vishnuite 'religions' are known. Similarly it is probable that Buddhism, of which much less is known, was not broken down into numerous sects, although besides Mahayana Buddhism of (the 'great vehicle') which was more widespread, or at least more visible now, there is some early evidence for the existence of simpler followers of 'primitive' Buddhism.

If you have a closed mind about what happened on 911 and you have bought into the "official" conspiracy theory, don't bother watching this. If you wish to honor the memory of those who were massacred on 911 by relentlessly probing for the truth of what happened, carry on and watch these videos of a presentation by Architect Richard Gage as he meticulously examines the facts of 911. Why are Architects and Engineers Re-examining the WTC Collapses? Jan 1, 2007 — Richard Gage, AIA The 6 years since 9/11/01 has given us the time and space to emerge from the hypnotic trance of the shocks of these attacks and to rationally evaluate the existing and new evidence that has become available. Architects and Engineers are trained to design buildings that function well and withstand potentially destructive forces. However, the 3 high-rise buildings at the World Trade Center which "collapsed" on 9/11 (the Twin Towers plus WTC Building #7) presented us with a body of evidence (i.e.controlled demolition) that was clearly outside the scope of our training and experience. In addition, the shock that hit us on that date from the repeated attacks and staggering loss of life has limited our ability to rationally evaluate what really happened. We therefore found ourselves relying solely upon the judgment of outside "experts"... and, quite willing to, "go along" with the collective myth that has unfolded: that "the buildings failed structurally due to the aircraft impacts and resulting fires". After all, we saw the aircraft slam into the building, the resulting huge fireball, and the ensuing "collapses". There is however a growing body of very solid evidence regarding these "collapses" that has emerged in the last couple of years - gaining ground even in the mainstream media. This new evidence casts grave doubt upon the theories of the 9/11 building collapse "experts" as well as the official reports by the 9/11 Commission, FEMA, and NIST. It lays out a solid convincing case which architects & engineers will readily see: that the 3 WTC high-rise buildings were destroyed by both classic and novel forms of controlled demolition. You will find the evidence here in our website (http://ae911truth.org) as well as at the linked websites. We hope you will find the courage and take the necessary time to review each section thoroughly. After all, if in fact these buildings were professionally demolished with explosives, and since it takes months of planning and engineering to place the explosives, and since these buildings were highly secure from the likes of terrorists, then we are presented with a horrible conclusion that we can not deny: that this entire event could only have been planned and orchestrated by some element(s) within the U.S. Government. The questions raised are therefore numerous and ominous that must be answered in the context of a truly independent congressional investigation with subpoena power. We can play a very significant role as building professionals because we have the necessary technical credibility that Congress will respond to. Please join us in calling for a re-investigation. "I remember getting a call from the fire department commander, telling me that they were not sure they were gonna be able to contain the fire, and I said, 'We've had such terrible loss of life, maybe the smartest thing to do is pull it.' And they made that decision to pull and we watched the building collapse." — Larry Silverstein - WTC Lease Holder
