Wayne Kemp began his career at age 16 playing guitar in a local Tulsa, Okla.,club. In 1965, after a mutual friend introduced him to George Jones, Wayne began playing lead guitar for George and then for other artists such as Patsy Cline, Red Sovine and Conway Twitty. In 1967, Wayne battled back from a terrible automobile accident to play guitar again. In1968, after Conway Twitty recorded "The Image Of Me," Wayne signed with Tree Publishingin Nashville. Into the '70s and throughout the '80s, Wayne enjoyed hits such as Twitty's "That's When She Started To Stop Loving You" (Top 5 in 1970), Johnny Cash's "One Piece At A Time" (#1 in 1976), Johnny Paycheck's "I'm The Only Hell (My Mama Ever Raised)" (Top 10 in 1977), George Strait's "The Fireman" (Top 5 in 1985), and Ricky Van Shelton's "I'll Leave This World Loving You" (#1 in 1988). An tossed-off rendition of one of the 20th Century's most brilliant and underrated songwriters' lovliest compositions. By all accounts as lovely (and complicated) a man as he was talented a performer.
