They are also said to place blame on the colonial policies of Britain, and were intending to deliver a petition to the British High Commission in Malaysia. Al Jazeera's Hamish MacDonald was there.

August 2006 Malaysia's employers stand accused of abusing Indonesian maids. We reveal evidence of mass exploitation, and governments unwilling to intervene in this lucrative business. "I saw my friends coming back to the village from Malaysia with lots of money... so I came here." But, Nirmala Bonat soon wished she had stayed behind. Her employer "poured hot water over me, pressed an iron to my body and beat me all over". Without legislation to protect the 320,000 Indonesian workers in Malaysia, it is a widespread and growing problem. Whilst Malaysia's Indonesian Ambassador Prince Rushdihardjo worries about those injured that "escape to our embassy," his government is reluctant to complain. It seems the wealth they return to their country is too valuable.

December 2006 There are claims Malaysia's secular constitution is being threatened by creeping Islamisation. Non-Muslims feel they are being treated as second-class citizens. Moorthy Maniam was a Malaysian Hindu hero. After he died, a group of Muslims claimed he'd made a deathbed conversion. Despite his widow's protests, the Sharia Courts declared he should be buried as a Muslim. "They used Moorthy to show that in this country, Islam is supreme", complains lawyer M Manoharan. In the 1980s, Malaysia's Sharia courts were given equal power to the civil courts, creating two parallel legal systems. But while the Sharia Courts are constantly trying to extend their authority, secular courts are reluctant to challenge them. "Non Muslims have no place to go and fight for their basic rights".
