Palais Schaumburg - Telephon - 1981 Palais Schaumburg war eine Musikgruppe der Neuen Deutsche Welle. Sie wurde 1980 gegründet und nach der Residenz des Bundeskanzlers in Bonn benannt. Zur Erstbesetzung gehörten neben Holger Hiller und Thomas Fehlmann u. a. auch FM Einheit (Abwärts, Einstürzende Neubauten), der die Gruppe jedoch Mitte 1981 verließ. Beeinflusst von The Residents aber auch dem Dadaismus der 20er und 30er Jahre versuchten Palais Schaumburg eine neue Art von bisher nicht gehörter avantgardistischer „Tanzmusik" zu komponieren. Nach 2 Independent-Singles bekam die Gruppe sogar einen Plattenvertrag von einem Majorlabel. Allerdings war ihre Musik für die Massen zu sperrig, so dass sie nicht über den Geheimtippstatus hinauskamen. Nach der Debüt-LP verließ Hiller die Band um eine Solokarriere zu starten. Mit seinem Nachfolger Walther Thielsch entstand das Album „Lupa", das mit seiner Mischung aus Funk, Lateinamerikanischen Klängen und Avantgarde ziemlich ungewöhnlich klang. Nach längerer Pause versuchte die zum Trio geschrumpfte Formation mit dem englischsprachigen „Parlez-Vous Schaumburg" einen Neuanfang. Produziert von Annette Humpe konnte der mainstreamorientierte Pop keinen so recht überzeugen, weswegen man sich schließlich trennte. (Quelle und mehr: Wikipedia)

Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros, live at the Roseland Ballroom in New York, in 1999. Amazingly badass performance. Must see. Sorry for the poor video quality - this video predates the broadband era so it inherently looks like garbage. Of course, I encoded the audio at 160kbps and used the AVC codec, so the file conversion is as good as it gets. If anybody has an upgrade, I'll encode it. This concert also includes filmed performances of Safe European Home, London Calling, Rudie Can't Fail, Tommy Gun, and White Riot. I have posted those as well (go to my user profile).
