Both things are actually different. democracy is a form of government in which is held by people under a free electoral system. republic is a country or state not ruled by a monarch. thats what makes both these things different. I know it's kind of hard to see, but the fact that we are run by a president makes the country a republic. the right to vote makes the government a democracy. I support gay marriage.

The electoral college decides that and the electoral college is made up of people who were selected based on the laws of each state. We don't get as say in who is put in the colleges and they can vote however they want despite how we vote. It's not a free electoral system nor is the power in the hands of the people which is how a democracy works. Thus why we are NOT a democracy.
