Feb 24, 2008 - She has far more power than that gentlemen. I believe she is a four engine vessel with approx 20000 hp. She was formerly a deep sea salvage and rescue operation tug, under contract to the French Navy. She is capable of speeds around 18-20 knots I belive.

Mar 4, 2008 - that sounds about right. a lot more power then it really needs.

Mar 4, 2008 - looks like fun. a lot of speed though for that size ship. imagine trying to sleep during that xD zero gravity sleeping x)
fishless12 Says:
Mar 23, 2008 - Yeah, I would be Shocked if that boat had less than 15K hp. And, for an off shore salvage tug like that one, there really is no such thing as "more power than you need" Boats like this prevent HUGE environmental disasters by towing disabled ships in ANY weather.

Mar 25, 2008 - Increadible footage! This reminds me of Farley Mowat's 'Grey Seas Under', the story of the deep sea rescue tug Foundation Frankin in the pre-WWII era, fantastic book.
Ogsonofgroo Says:
Mar 26, 2008 - This ship and her sister were R-R deep sea tugs (UT 507's built '78-'79 (Norway, leased to the French navy)& still working, these ships have 23,000hp)now replaced by two new Rolls-Royce designed ships ( UT 515 designs)now also on consignment to the French navy for costal protection, they are rated 19.8knots@16,000kw with 200+tonnes of pull at the bollards. Amazing vessels all!
Ogsonofgroo Says:
Mar 26, 2008 - "In the last 25 years, the Abeille Flandre tug and its crew have helped to prevent 16 disasters on a scale similar to that of the Amoco Cadiz disaster (4 million tonnes of oil), salvaged 214 vessels, assisted 7,200 sailors and prevented the certain death of a further 150 sailors." From one of the company web sites Burbon-online (dot) com.
Ogsonofgroo Says:
Mar 26, 2008 - The UT 507 here can pull 160tons sustained at the bollard, 175tons for a short time. Until the 515 came along she was the largest tug in Europe.

Oct 28, 2008 - Some of the vitals on this mighty little ship might be of interest. Displacement is 2,220 tons. She's 208 feet long, 48 feet wide, and draws 23 feet. She's got four diesels pumping out a total of 3,150 hp. Top speed is 17 knots. (Got this info from a brochure I picked up in Brest.) Suffice it to say that that area is brutal to navigate in. The waves aren't abnormally high, but they're very closely spaced. Almost impossible conditions for normal boats to operate in.
