Aug 2, 2007 - is this like, abstractist pop?, or maybe alternative pop???, or maybe unpopular pop???? i like the addition of guitars in her music, who's the dude?

scandar79 Says:

Aug 11, 2007 - The dude singing in the song is Momus. It's not the guy shown in the video.

mixcool Says:

Aug 11, 2007 - it's call shibuya-kei o shibuya style is a retro music

GaijiinGuy Says:

Aug 12, 2007 - okay thanks, i didn't know, this is one of my favorites by either of them...thanks mixcool, but aren't PUFFY, Ayumi and other J-pop stars also considered shibuya-kei???

jhtomeo Says:

Aug 15, 2007 - They are just considered standard jpop. Shibuya kei refers to a more specific style of music created by a group of bands and artists who mostly originated from the Shibuya area of Tokyo from the mid to late 90's. To vastly over-simplify the issue, its basically Japanese artists interpreting and performing western pop music in their own style.

GaijiinGuy Says:

Aug 16, 2007 - okay, i think i get it, because stadard j-poppers have western influences but less english and....this is hard to express...like...more nihongo???, they're kinda' all over the place???....i don't know what i'm talking about...but yeah, like Cornelius, Kahimi, Flipper's Guitar,(maybe Towa Tei???) they all conform more to genre or style and have a more western feel...what do you think Jhtomeo??

jhtomeo Says:

Aug 24, 2007 - I think the main musical difference between jpoppers and shibuya kei artists came from different cultural sources of inspiration. Jpoppers like Ayumi draw inspiration from their own native Japanese culture, whereas Shibuya Kei groups based their sounds upon the styles of Western artists.

jhtomeo Says:

Aug 24, 2007 - For example, Pizzicato 5 imitated European acts such as Serge Gainsbourg, and Peter Thomas. Neil and Iraiza were inspired by American soft rock groups of the 70's such as Pablo Cruise, Seals and Crofts, Pilot, etc. They reinterpreted these western sounds in their own Japanese pop style, which is what made Shibuya Kei such a fun subgenre. I wish youtube allowed links, because there are essays on Shibuya kei that could explain all of this much better than I could :P

GaijiinGuy Says:

Aug 26, 2007 - its cool you know so much about it jhtomeo because i just learned about karie through cornelius who my japanese tutor reccomended... others through my friend PUFFY and Utada Hikaru, after, I looked for artists beyond pop, and trough my tutor discovered, Blankey Jet City, Fishmans, Polaris, Dir en Grey and other "bands" also Cornelius

GaijiinGuy Says:

Aug 29, 2007 - its cool you are so educated surrounding it...

GaijiinGuy Says:

Aug 29, 2007 - yeah, this is really different from karie's usual(if one could call it that) sound...

lopezmt Says:

Sep 26, 2007 - But I think that Kahimi is a little different than other groups from the Shibuya Kei movement, like FPM, in that her music is more sexualized and was purposefully done, i.e. Lolita Pop Dollhouse, especially by Momus

bingbong35 Says:

Oct 15, 2007 - Check out the two volume compilation of japanese club pop entitled "Sushi 3003" and "Sushi 4004," if you haven't already. Tracks from Pizzicato Five, Kahimi Kharie, Fantastic Plastic Machine, Havanna Exotica, Towa Tei, Hajime Tachibana, Takako Minnekawa etc. are featured.

bingbong35 Says:

Oct 15, 2007 - One of my favorite songs of Kahimi's from "KKKK." This must've been released as single in Japan. It's a treat for me to see as her music wasn't released as singles here(Momus' material as well). Thank you for posting Kahimi Chiboyee.
