One example I can think of is improving products for people with a disability and help them live a better quality of life. Yes Industrial Design can be about aesthetics but it can also be about creating or improving a product that can provide better interaction with it's intended user.

Dec 19, 2007 - You cant just decide your whole outcome on a single video. Anything you come in contact with is a result of people like these students anyways. We'll I've gotten offers for Industrial Design and Interior Architecture and I'm picking the prior. I did a year of architecture and it wasn't stimulating. Btw you used CAD so you would have to know how to render in Industrial design.

Dec 19, 2007 - You don't have to be an "Industrial Designer" to make a product though. I was set on ID at GaTech forever, but after looking into other schools and videos (not only this one, but it's the worst by far) I decided ME offered a bit more substance. I was a top artist at a magnet school, but "artists" are too different of a breed for me.

Feb 1, 2008 - Apparently some of these kids don't know how to articulate what it is that inspires them. SCAD should consider Public Speaking courses in the curriculum. Thus giving their students some self confidence.

There are dissertations, books, and thesis written around the rhetoric of design, asking " what is design?" The truth of the matter is that the term has not stabilized. Every institution calls it something different to narrow the focus or guide the academic discussion.

Apr 19, 2008 - Im in I.D. at Humber I.T.A.L. in Toronto ( fin 3rd year). I think its not limited to anything or any one field. Its a design methodology that you develop(everyone has their own somewhat unique method) It combines knowledge of certain things like manufact tech, colour theory, ergonomics etc.. and you apply ur process which allows you to understand the problem then develop ideation, research and concepts that will solve the problem and make things better. Products, services, interfaces whatever!

Oh and Sun Devil.. if your not an industrial designer you prob wont understand. Aug 5, 2008 - I think it would be taking things and making them more economical and ergonomical. Its probably mostly needed because in the engineering feild, its more often than not, left to the suits to get a product out, no matter where it is in the stage of design, a good example would be the space shutle challenger, some of the designers knew there were flaws, but because of deadlines, they pushed in through.
