http://www.mediaed.org Jean Kilbourne's award-winning video offers an in-depth analysis of how female bodies are depicted in advertising images and the devastating effects of those images on women's health. Addressing the relationship between these images and the obsession of girls and women with dieting and thinness, Slim Hopes offers a new way to think about life-threatening eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, and a well-documented critical perspective on the social impact of advertising. Slim Hopes is a lively and engaging program suitable for a wide range of audiences at high schools, colleges and universities. Using over 150 ads, it informs as it entertains, allowing viewers to build an analytic framework for considering the impact of advertising on women's health.

Aug 21, 2008 - i agree, im 17 and have been suffering from anorexia nervosa for about 2 years, if only someone could prevent that terrible 'stereotypical' image of the 'perfect woman' from growing in a young girl (and BOYS) mind, /we' all want to be the light feather that a strong breeze could lift in the wind but its simply a battle you cannot win.we cannever reach beauty untill we realise- *nxt message*
zatgrlsaiidwhaaaa Says:
Aug 21, 2008 - beauty is in us all... found in the imperfections which over rule our bodies. i agree people need to CHALLENGE these impossible expectations placed upon us, however its easier said then done.

Aug 26, 2008 - It's dangerous when in countries like U.S. teenagers r getting breast implants; the Dept of Health & Human Services has spelled it out that you cannot breatfeed children with implants! It affects childrens' &(when they become adults) their immune systems, they r 5x more prone to allergies &many studies point to lowered iq or deficient cognitive abilities. &NOW in advertising we ARE SEEING BIG BREASTS EVERYWERE.THIS IS DANGEROUS FOR FUTURE, 4PEOPLE. IT'S SAD,but SURGEONS WILL DO IT ANYWAY FOR $

Aug 30, 2008 - whatever happened to the good old days where models could be size 12? Now days you have to have your rib cages sticking through to be considered "attractive".

Sep 17, 2008 - Isn't it likely that you have issues deeper than wanting to be like the girls in magazines? I'm not saying magazines don't hurt. I remember hours spent trying to get airbrushed makeup and hair looks. But wanting to be a light feather lifted in the wind is NOT a visual, but a physical metaphor. Possibly you want to FEEL differently, not LOOK differently.
totallybarefoot Says:
Sep 17, 2008 - It's not the ribs that are attractive. A very tall, broad shouldered small waisted girl is the best body type for showing off high fashion. She's practically a walking clothes hanger, no body to interfere with the design. People are attracted to the design, and think they are attracted to the girl. But in plain clothes, Levi's and a tee shirt, Paris Hilton types are NOT the favourites. Are they?
evillittletree Says:
Oct 4, 2008 - this is a great speech but I very much disagree with the fact that women's bodies haven't changed in America! It seems the fatter the average American, the skinnier the models are in the magazines. I'm not for anorexia or obsession with food in the least but encouraging girls to be happy with themselves isn't going to help them escape obesity and heart problems! You are beautiful when you are HEALTHY!

Oct 14, 2008 - paris hilton is skinny...not very nice
totallybarefoot Says:
Oct 14, 2008 - Paris Hilton is naturally very tall, fine boned, and slender. She has developed muscles. Her ribs do not show. There is nothing wrong with the way Paris Hilton looks. She is not painfully thin or unnatural. Now, Jennifer Lopez can never look like that, now would she want to. But don't hate on tall slender girls.
totallybarefoot Says:
Oct 14, 2008 - Look, body image issues are not caused by magazines. As a young woman I had the culturally ideal body type: tall, fine boned, slender, willowy. I never thought about my weight until girls asked me how I got that way. I felt senseless guilt re my genes. Prior, I'd tried overeating in the hopes I would grow a bosom. The example of my best friends agony over her D cups at 12 did not deter me from wishing. Media told us each we were the "ideal" and it did not help us with body image.
totallybarefoot Says:
Oct 14, 2008 - Well said! Perhaps we need to shift from a "how you look" ideal to a "how you perform" ideal. I hated being judged as "good because you are slim" when it was nothing I had DONE. But I loved riding, shooting, archery, ballet (it hurt like hell my skinny undeveloped muscles) and martial arts. I'm old now. When I remember the great moments of my life, I don't remember what size I was or what I wore. I remember how my body felt. How it FELT to be inside that body.
totallybarefoot Says:
Oct 14, 2008 - No disrespect intended. Yes, Paris is tall &gorgeous, has feet so huge she could not buy shoes in a department store, and she is abnormal. So am I. I only wanted to say that girls built like Paris are just that way by nature. Gaining weight would not make them gorgeous lush thick Evas and JLos. It would just make them tall fine boned women with excess fat hanging in all the wrong places. I know this from youthful experience trying to be full figured. LOL@me!

fjfjvmvm Says:
Oct 20, 2008 - What a bunch of lies; "women's body types haven't changed." Of course they have, there is an epidemic of obesity, most women are overweight. More cultural pressure to stay thin would seem to be in order. You "can't diet your way" to thinness. Another obvious total lie.
baeswyn Says:
Oct 31, 2008 - I'm a 28 year old dude, and yeah its true, i'm almost embarressed to turn the TV on when im in the room with my mom. Every chick on tv is geared to driving me nuts.
baeswyn Says:
Oct 31, 2008 - I think Paris Hilton is so-so not great or anything, but just turn the local news on and when they go through the volley ball highlights, those chicks are specifically hot, not because they're underage but because of the clothes they wear... its all in the clothes. Moving aside the point because im fairly intoxicated, I will add that 80's chick are totally un hot, and 90's only so-so, truly I need to seek psychological help, because im making a few discoveries in my thinking.

Nov 10, 2008 - she was talking about the body type not the body of a woman. Body type is given by your genes, therefore that did not change!

Nov 18, 2008 - "80% of 10 yr old girls on diets" dat is f-in disgustin! the media plays a big part in this whole "slim is beautiful" kinda thing but it has alot to do with girls' self-esteem as well! I'm a girl & i feel sick wen i see an anorexic girl or just a stick thin girl, i cant see how anyone can find that sexy! i'm 17, bout 5ft1 & weigh bout 6:10, size 8 (6 sumtimes)i dont TRY to b dat weight, i just am, i used to b a chubby baby but i do ALOT of sports. girls just need to realise wot's important!
tritrek Says:
Aug 13, 2008 - OK, 11.93% of college women is playing the skeleton gig, but 80% of America is FAT as a hyppo! Let's say 8% is OK. If those poeple would simply THINK, then those "be slim" ads would have no effect on them. I'm afraid if there were ads encouraging people to eat excrements they would happily recycle their own "products" or even buy some premium sh*t. It just scares me how America acts as a biiig cattle and does whatever the Farmer (=TV) tells them to do...
