70's Rockers ARGENT perform "Hold your head up" on USTV. Rod Argent seems to be "not there" as he whips his mop top and occasionally mumbles background vocal when convenient. Introduction by mellow fellow John Denver.

Oct 3, 2008 - I remember watching this very broadcast when I was a kid. This is an example of one of the worst things about music on TV in the 70s: bands pretending to play music while the sound is from a recording. One great achievement of Saturday Night Live was that it brought truly live music back to TV.

Oct 12, 2008 - If that is live, then it is the most fake-looking and fake-sounding real playing I've every seen. (Well, maybe not the MOST). The guitar playing is completely off -- he seems to stop playing guitar and start again with no difference in the sound of the guitar. At 3:55, there is a scream of "Ow!", but no one's mouth is making a corrsesponding movement. Etc., etc.

Oct 14, 2008 - The guitar riff is so beautiful it's beyond belief. Argent really tapped into pure magic on this tune. Loved it the first time way back in the 70's. A true testament to the genius of seventies music.

Oct 15, 2008 - Maybe you're right. Or maybe it's a bit of both. I'm no music expert. I remember liking this song a lot when I was a kid.

Nov 1, 2008 - LOL. Never thought I'd get to see this group perform. Dad's 8-track tape had it back in 1975. Long before I got exposed to AOR. The High Quality button really makes a difference on this one. Thanks.

Nov 21, 2008 - oh wow..I always liked this song. So simple yet so good. It is from 1971 or 1972. Back in the day where I stayed up till 2 am to see them on "Don kirshners rock conert" on TV. This was the era of long hair, old army jackets, filthy bell bottoms that dragged the ground and got all freyed, hopeing the war would end before you got drafted, muscle cars, hot hippy chicks in white bell bottoms, 45 cent gallons of gas, the aroma of Marboros and pot in the air, no computers, no cable and endless youth.

Nov 21, 2008 - to IKE11111: yes, the vocals sound live to me. They are just off enough in certain spots to be real. So do you think the rest of it is a recording? Usually when I see groups "faking it" on stage they do not have their guitar amps behind them and are not "plugged in"....so I am a little uncertain of this one.
inkey2 Says:
Nov 21, 2008 - listen to the drummer go off beat at 1:52
kottmeier Says:
Nov 21, 2008 - I agree - I think they are playing
IKE11111 Says:
Nov 22, 2008 - I think the rest is a recording....notice how it fades out at the ending with the audience clapping.
