recorded live in Los Angeles, August 2006. Sloan's new album "Sailover" is available on Hightone Records at hightone.com. Video by Infostructures.net. Show produced by WesternBeat.com. In 1965, PF Sloan's heartfelt song "Eve of Destruction," performed by Barry McGuire, became a Billboard number one hit. The anti-war anthem was one of the first protest songs to make the pop charts. It became the rallying cry for supporters of the 26th Amendment to the Constitution, which changed the voting age from 21 to 18. Sloan wrote a string of hits in the '60s, including "Secret Agent Man" (recorded by Johnny Rivers), "You Baby" (The Turtles) and "Where Were You When I Needed You" (The Grassroots). - excerpt from the NPR radio program on PF Sloan.

Jan 8, 2008 - i wasn't trying to insult McGuire, just trying to point out there's a difference in the kind of creativity between doing a good cover, and WRITING a great song. btw does it occur to you that by you saying that a comparison to the singers on American Idol is an insult, that you are insulting all those singers and their fans?

Jan 16, 2008 - Phil is the genius who wrote the song but who knows where it would have gone had Barry not recorded it in his style as the two voices and phrasing are completely different and this is a classic case of two artists combining to create a masterpiece. I'm so glad Phil is playing again as he is a must along with McCartney and Paul Simon of writers who have influenced me that I have to see live. Cheers

Jan 28, 2008 - Saw PF on his recent trip to Portland. He's just as full of s--t as he always was. He wrote some good tunes, was a flop as a performer, his recordings bombed, and he almost killed the Grass Roots after Willy, Denny and I left by putting out two horrable singles after we put out Where We're You When I Needed You. (He later errased Willies vocal and replaced with his own as if he had released it) Thanks to Rob Grill the Roots were saved. This video shows his perfectly. An over inflated goof.

You don't believe in war so what's that Quran your toting....Don't you understand, if Iran gets the bomb there's no running away.. Hate your non-Muslim neighbors but don't forget to pray five times a day. Tell me over and over and over again my friend Islam is bringing the world to destruction...

Mar 8, 2008 - wow such sour grapes from a "mellow" guy no one would ever have heard of without that song "you put out" that was written by Sloan. Funny the Grass Roots in their heyday continued to record good Sloan songs after you were gone, why weren't they begging you to come back? Sloan is a non-commercial nutty goof, which makes him all the more lovable for his great contributions to popular music.

dymo60 Says:

Mar 10, 2008 - Mellow guy? Not Me. Still don't think anyone has heard of me and don't care. Sour grapes. Non here. Just have an opinion. Like I don't think the constitution was changed because Phil wrote 'Eve'. I'm I not entilted to an opinion on this forum? I was happy to leave the "Toots" Never wanted back. Phil wrote some good tunes. Which proves you can be a goof and write good tunes.

infostream Says:

Mar 11, 2008 - you're entitled to your opinion, but it doesn't seem like you read your own post - you falsely claimed Sloan killed "your" Grass Roots. I'm entitled to respond to your opinion with facts, free country. re: his claim that he helped change the constitution, you have to argue with NPR: The anti-war anthem was one of the first protest songs to make the pop charts. It became the rallying cry for supporters of the 26th Amendment to the Constitution, which changed the voting age from 21 to 18.

dymo60 Says:

Mar 11, 2008 - On your bio it gives your age as 39. The Vietnam war ended before you were born. PF was a distant memory in 1977/78 and your giving me a history lesson? I lived that era attended anti war rallies and marched to help change the voting age. I worked with Phil, Lou, Steve, Bones, and Jay. I doubt you have even met any of them. I respect your opinion as a fan and an expert in US history. But ........ I was there, for the war, the 26th Amendment and the music. Sorry & Good Bye.

infostream Says:

Mar 15, 2008 - you were there and so were many others, i just wanted to let people reading the thread that your memories may differ from the historical record. it's just kind of a bummer for me that you were "there" in that great era of peace and love with the guy that wrote "your" song, and came here with nothing but negative things to say.

thewalkingman Says:

Mar 17, 2008 - you're a fucking moron.

javernot Says:

Apr 12, 2008 - I also love Sloan's "A Must to Avoid." It's my favorite Herman's Hermits song. Sloan was well tuned into the pop sounds of the mid-60's. I wish he had written more hits.

kevininidaho Says:

Apr 23, 2008 - Prophetic song. I'll bet he wishes he hadn't had to have written the lyrics.

mellis10 Says:

May 13, 2008 - are you kidding sour grapes hey child this song concerns more than you can understand live a more years and strife as we have and then gripe

bek12 Says:

Jun 10, 2008 - Wow, I'm glad we have such a genius like you to tell us who we should like. Only problem is that I like Mcquire's version best, but I also like Dylan and Cohen, and I can't stand American Idol. I bet that really confuses you... you idiot.

mdf072 Says:

Jul 9, 2008 - Funny? when you listen to the words of this song then read the angry hateful posts... Think about that...

mileshye Says:

Jul 9, 2008 - What's up with the FISA vote? Why do Dems keep covering crimes of the Republicans? We need another 60s style awakening!

skilski2003 Says:

Jul 16, 2008 - Well, good for you. Did you go to Vietnam? I doubt you have memories of that "war". My husband does and he doesn't like them...but he dealt with them gracefully w/ 3 Purple Hearts. You were there for "the war"? Pleaseeeeeeeee. If you weren't in Nam, dude you weren't there. By the way, hubby hates war and hates his memories...but he was drafted. Where did you go?

skilski2003 Says:

Jul 16, 2008 - This is for DYMO...

artbycheri Says:

Jul 31, 2008 - hey it WAS an era wether we liked the way we lived it, or who we were in it, or what happened to us in it, it must be something to be remembered because alot of civil liberties did come about because of all those people who did wine moan groan complain protest OPENED THEIR MOUTHES AND DID A F****** THING ABOOUT IT. I'm sorry but people are like cattle and will be led off to slaughter if not taught to think different or openly opinionate. My utmost respect to your husband my family has vets too

jesperlp Says:

Oct 30, 2008 - I believe you are generalizing a bit. Oh and ruining the song's lyrics by turning it into something it's not. :)

jesperlp Says:

Oct 30, 2008 - This was supposed to have been a reply to minnesotaviking22302's comment. :P

ConstitutionSupportr Says:

Nov 1, 2008 - When we outed a popular government in Iran and then installed the Shah, there was anger, there was retaliation. When we built a military base on Muslim holy ground in Saudi Arabia, there was anger, there was retaliation. When we give billions of dollars to the Israeli government's military which is used largely to kill Muslims, there is anger, there is retaliation. Blowback. If you disagree with me then invite China to build a base in D.C. Common Sense. Do unto others.....
