Aug 15, 2008 - En esa epoca el cine ya no era silente, pero Chaplin insistía en hacer sus películas a la manera antigua. Sólo algunas partes tienen sonido, como la que canta o algunos efectos, como aplausos, etc. El estaba en contra del cine sonoro y quiso demostrar con esto, que no se necesitaban de las palabras para hacer reír. Lo hizo al cantar algo en "ningún idioma"
groundge2 Says:
Aug 15, 2008 - he didn't forgot the lyricis... he act like he forgort the lyrics... is part of the movie. He wanted to show that words are not necessary to make ppl smile

Aug 16, 2008 - The character didn't forget the lyrics. He never remembered them. The gamin wrote the words on his cuffs so he could still sing without memorizing the words. During his opening dance, his cuffs flew off so he had to improvise. This movie was made about 10 years after adding voice to film was possible. Charlie Chaplin resisted voice in film because he had major fans in every country. Translating text is easy, but dubbing is expensive. Gibberish doesn't need to be translated, so he did use voice.

Aug 30, 2008 - He sings a mixture of French+Italian. basically hes putting up a point that people can enjoy films even if they cant understand the sound.Chaplin was a theatre performer so he prefered silent films.
WinchellB Says:
Sep 4, 2008 - but the funny thing is that though the whole thing is jibberish, you have a somewhat good idea of what he is singing about, reading from his body movements.

Minots59 Says:
Sep 18, 2008 - He didn't make silent films because he was a theater performer. When he first made movies that all there was. Talkies weren't invented for some time after he started film making. During City Lights was when talkies became mainstream but he stuck with silent films because that's what he preferred and felt that a good story could be told with body language rather than actual words.

Aug 10, 2008 - Yes, that is what they're singing. Very racist, but in those days they lived it was racism was very blatant.
