I tried leather jump rope but its hard to do tricks with it and it broke after a while. tried everlast speed rope the $6 one. and it broke at the handles the same day. tried go fit speed rope it breaks the second day. I think I bought 6 of the go fit last 2 weeks that $60 each. I have been jumping for 3 years and i getting really good at it and i am addicted to it too. I add ankles, wrists weights. I think skipping is great it gives you great rythym, coordination, timing. it also increase your hand speed and keeps you light on your toes. Your calves become massive after few weeks of it!
