Nov 6, 2008 - Mate, the Vikings did come to control Normandy, however, not in numbers sufficient to ensure the perpetuation of their culture and national identity. In short terms, they were assimilated into the local French population, because they were far fewer in number than the local French. Although they were called Normans, meaning the men of French Normandy, they were neither Scandinavian, nor Danish, nor Norwegian, just French. The Swedes btw never did sail west of Jylland, only to the East.
Loetjnant Says:
Nov 6, 2008 - What amazes me the most, is that all that debate about William's men and yet nobody remembers poor King Harold Godwinsson. Now here's a man who was indeed half-Danish and also one hell of a brave man. So many years after Hastings, and still we talk of William the Bastard (so-called by his contemporaries) and his French-spawn dynasty. History is not only written by the winners, it also writes about them even though the winner might sometimes be less of a man than the loser.

Nov 6, 2008 - the word Norman comes from Northman, referring to either Norseman or Dane. The people of Normandy were of Viking origin, and they stopped speaking their native language in the 900s, so by 1066 they spoke French. this isnt English propaganda, it's fact.

SPIRITOFODIN Says:
Nov 13, 2008 - The Normans remained Viking in spirit, even with the adoption of French customs. Otherwise, they could not have accomplished what they did. Natives from Brittany were unreliable at Hastings.
SPIRITOFODIN Says:
Nov 13, 2008 - I, too, am fond of King Harold Godwinson.

Nov 13, 2008 - A few years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,"Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand IM REALLY SORRY FOR POSTING THIS
