Apr 30, 2008 - my name is Gary Burton, i hope this gives me the same powers as his skill. peace out

May 8, 2008 - well for starters the swinging of notes is actually just a shortened version of writing different rhythms, more closer to 12/8 then 4/4 or whatever you use. it is really just simpler to read 4/4 and say the notes "swing". another thing, however you want to play the music, cool, as long as it sounds good. i didnt really even hear a swing anyways so...

May 8, 2008 - its crazy how people are going nuts about a pretty well defined musical fact. Latin 8ths are played straight. go listen to songs like one note samba and night in Tunisia. i figured my posting of my previous comment would merely merit comments saying DUH! but apparently some of you didn't know that. well i hope i helped. (also, gary burton is pretty awesome)

Sep 4, 2008 - you're actually discussing an ACADEMIC approach to UNDERSTANDING swing... But, the pros don't use that triplet concept... they swing based on their own personal feeling... it has less to do with mathematics. If you compare the swing of Lee Konitz to the swing of Michael Brecker, or Chick Corea's to Wynton Kelly's, you'll see that they swing in different degrees, so to speak. Swing also has to do with the dynamics and the articulation of notes. I've heard Chick say that Mozart's music swings.

Nov 8, 2008 - its true, the swing comes from the rhythm section not the actual melody

Nov 29, 2008 - What a cool version of Afro Blue...I had only heard the coltrane version which seems to be overplayed a bit, but the latin vibe gives it a nice kick
