One of our snipers set the current record of somewhere along 18 to 2000 yards o so if I remember. The Canadian Sniper team was out for a while and were low on ammo and had to use some american rounds which are more powerfun then our sniper rounds. It is a video of someone shooting Rock chucks, big rodents, like a groundhog .50 BMG bullets have massive energy but they don't expand like that. That was a varmint bullet. Even if a .50 BMG did expand like that, people don't blow up like that. A chuck is a compact animal with short legs. A man is big with heavy bones and long limbs. If people blew up like that, there would be parts flying that looked human, the limbs are too far apart.

API rds penetrate thin armour and contain a core that blows and burns after penetration of eg. fuel tanks. "Muzzle energy" is an esoteric description of "kinetic energy", as measured at the muzzle. I am not confused as to its definition. The ballistic coefficient of a 750 grain 50 cal spitzer is ~ 1.01. Knowing that, retained energy @ 1000 yrds is straightforward. That figure is > 6000ft lbs. That is > 6 times the "muzzle energy" of a 5.56 round.
