Nov 6, 2007 - somehow stiff though..doesnt deliver the emotion and the naturality that this piece (like almost anything else) is supposed to be sung with. My 2c

Dec 3, 2007 - He was only 27 or so when this was recorded.

Dec 9, 2007 - I have to say...I don't see how he beat out Terfel. He's good, and exceptional at Rusian rep, but Terfel is even more exceptional and at just about everything...

Jan 23, 2008 - Very beautiful voice but not a convincing Renato. Great singer but not a specially good Verdi interpreter.

Jan 23, 2008 - This man was 27 years old in this recording, what a voice he has. That Russian quality that must be born into is something that I dream about.

May 14, 2008 - You must be tone deaf; or an ardent welsh supporter no matter what.
Chiliarches Says:
May 14, 2008 - He's a lyric baritone who covers too much and then tries to sing Verdi. His dramatic rep is inappropriate on multiple levels--as many will tell you, he is often completely drowned out by his colleagues. I appreciate his Russian songs and his Russian roles (where a Verdi voice isn't needed), but he's not one for the ages, sorry. If you want a tremendous Russian baritone, seek out Pavel Lisitsian, who uses his beautiful instrument appropriately and intelligently.

May 20, 2008 - at least with that one, students understand what means covering ! Maybe it is inappropriate but it is well sung though! I will seek Cappuccilli or Bastianini out,but the baritones of our days have to count on this Hvoro... and that is not so bad! that is not bad at all actually ! his technique is really good, so why not listening and have a nice moment ?
Chiliarches Says:
May 20, 2008 - Or Tibbett or Merrill or Warren or Bechi or Herlea. As to Hvorostovsky--no, not so bad, very good in fact. I enjoy him, I just think Terfel's better and deserved to win the competition.

Sep 13, 2008 - He strains his voice in this. Dramatic Verdi is just not for him, he does not have the right weight for it. He is very much a lyric baritone, and a really very good one at that I will say.

Oct 1, 2008 - I don't care if he is pushing, he is known for pushing, but this performance is beyond amazing. The musicality, phrasing, characterization, all perfection for this role. Amazing!!!!
Belcore14 Says:
Oct 3, 2008 - Terfel is a wonderful actor, but he's become something of a glorified barker. Listen to his recordings of Handel - he has little to no technique. He just barks through all of them... and the runs! Those are a disaster.
raphaelhudson Says:
Oct 24, 2008 - No offence Tommy, but the kind of baritones that verdi liked and wrote this music for were lyric not dramatic. Verdi has changed since certain singers began to sing his music basically without dynamics....
