Kean Wong: On Sunday afternoon, Chengdu City farmers were protesting the Pengzhou Petrochemical Plant. These people's land was taken away from them by the CCP to make way for the factory, but they received very little money to cover the costs. Here's more from Chengdu. Hundreds of people came out to protest. Some wore white masks over their mouths fearing pollution from the chemical plant. The local authority dispatched a large number of police and dispersed the crowd. [Chen Yunfei, Protest Organizer]: "The farmers face large scale demolition to construct this ethylene plant. We can't let party officials do things at will, because it is an issue that involves the future of our children and our children's children." Chen was talking about the pollution caused by the construction and operation of the plant. But even more concerning to the farmers is the fact that they have no more land to farm on and make a living. [Li Dexuan, Land Illegally Seized]: "About 5,000 Chinese acres land were levied. It involves ten villages. Our houses were forcefully demolished more than a year ago. We are now homeless, our life is especially hard. Since we appealed ten of us were detained. Until now there are still two people who have been detained since April 11th when we staged another protest." Another farmer from Hongguang Village talks about traveling to Beijing to appeal to authorities there. [Wang Chengcui, Farmer]: "They only paid 30% of the relocation compensation to us. We tried to appeal to different levels of the government. In Beijing we were forcefully detained. Now it is hard to make a living." The Pengzhou petrochemical project will include an ethylene plant that will produce 800,000 tons of the chemical each year. There will also be an oil refining factory with a production capacity of 10 million tons. NTD, Chengdu City, China.
