Here's a rare video of Jaco and Jeff Berlin at MI in 1985. The bass Jaco used was lent by Greg Wilson, a student there at the time. According to Greg, Jaco showed up for the performance without a bass... and the rest is history.

Nov 11, 2008 - Hahahahaha. Tuba soloing. Hahahahaha. You know, it kinda DOES sound like two tuba players goin' at it. While simultaneously truck racing. Hahahaha. Two of my favorite bassists especially when they play in a "group" environment.

Nov 20, 2008 - The only people who I like playing bass solos are Jeff and Stanley Clarke. Most bass solos are godawful terrible. And I hate the f*king 6 string bass players trying to be guitar players. Don't get me started on those a-holes.

Nov 24, 2008 - Check this video to see a great 6-string bass player "Bass Extremes - A Chick From Corea"

Nov 24, 2008 - >> Check this video to see a great 6-string bass player . . I looked at it, not really impressed. No comparision to Jeff's soloing. And I think he's one of those "bass players" who really wants to be a guitarist. I really can't stand most, if not all, 6 string bass players.
bogardvandijk Says:
Nov 25, 2008 - the 6str, bass is a bass..not a guitar.anthony jackson invented it in 1970. who said that a bass guitar should be with 4 str. that's not an upright bass! cheers :)
jonjonz91 Says:
Nov 26, 2008 - stupid arguments. and extremist opinions about 6 strings, please do keep them to yourself. apparently you don't understand the 6 strings bass enough yet. the extra strings serve to extend the bassist's range to manage new genres such as, and especially, fusion. and the C string of the 6 strings bass doesnt even cross over to the guitar's range much. and to limit one instrument to doing just what it is 'meant to do' is like telling a housewife to stick to doing chores and nth else. zz.
jonjonz91 Says:
Nov 26, 2008 - I am an acoustic upright player myself - 4 strings. but i dun regard the six string as a mutated bass or the sorts. i keep my mind open, very open, when it comes to music. That's how jazz, or any other form of music and/or art, developed and grew in the first place. If you were the first jazz player ever in the history of jazz, i doubt jazz would even progress that much to have a history to talk about.
jonjonz91 Says:
Nov 26, 2008 - Maybe you are just being a purist. but like any other extremists, it doesnt serve to benefit the art form in any way besides retaining its 'traditional' elements in the ever-evolving realm it delves in. but then again, what defines 'traditional' exactly? Can you define 'jazz' in layman's term? i doubt so.
jonjonz91 Says:
Nov 26, 2008 - SO conclusion: YOU are the a-hole for being a narrowminded purist. i personally have nth against purists who retain the traditions of a century old so proudly. but at least they keep an open mind when it comes to appreciating music and instruments and whatever related, while being a purist (only playing music the 'traditional' way or using the instrument the 'traditional' way). The real purists out there understand the non-pure stuff without kicking them aside as godawful terrible.
GaryNull Says:
Nov 26, 2008 - >> a narrowminded purist. . . I'm not at all. I just have one rule: "It has to sound good" And most 6 string bass do not. And yes, most bass solos are awful.
meirelesgabriel Says:
Nov 28, 2008 - NICE HAIR AND MOUSTACHE
Marlowann Says:
Nov 29, 2008 - Saying that your only rule is "It has to sound good" certainly doesn't detract from the notion that you're a narrow minded purist, and if you think most six string bass players don't, then wether or not I agree with you depends on what majority you're talking about. The majority of ALL six string bass players, in the world, are definitely not as good as the minority. I'll agree there. But the same goes for all bassists, generally.
Marlowann Says:
Nov 29, 2008 - You know, if he wanted to be a guitarist, he would play the guitar.
HK271 Says:
Dec 8, 2008 - just to put my say out there, i think most six string bass players just want to take their playing to the next level, and experiment with what composers and critics call music modernism. Jean Sibelius, an esteemed Finnish composer, was often called restrained and unrefreshing for the simple fact that he never experimented outside of his comfort zone of late romantic music. So while some people prefer 4 strings, I applaud those who are willing to try out different concepts
Rectomitosis Says:
Dec 13, 2008 - Carl Thompson invented the 6-string bass- Anthony Jackson MAY have had the concept for a 6-string but Carl 'invented' and created the world's first 6-string bass.
bogardvandijk Says:
Dec 13, 2008 - Hi Rectomitosis ! Read the article by Chris Jisi from january 2000...an interview with Anthony Jackson. It's all in there :) Cheers!
richardjft Says:
Dec 20, 2008 - There were fretted six string basses, known as bass viols, from as long ago as 1701, and Fender also made a six string bass from 1961 althoguh this was tuned the same as a guitar but an octave lower.
paapakobe Says:
Dec 21, 2008 - LOL! Wehaconn.. you are funny! You shouldn't be a musician, do comedy - we might pay to see that. Yes, stand-up, w/ a 'stand-up' bass. Long live porno-tuba truck racing!! This was a school demo, not a concert piece per se.
dmgty88 Says:
Dec 25, 2008 - Man, the guy who lent Jaco a bass must've put the bass in a glass container after.

Jan 6, 2009 - Agree!
6y298 Says:
Nov 7, 2008 - By his illogic, guitars should never crunch like a bass, wail like a cello nor scream like a violin. From ringing harmonics and chords to awesome lightspeed percussion to thunderous gut busting air movement, let the bass soar I say. The vaaaast majority of the music playing or just music loving population worldwide agrees.
