Nov 11, 2008 - I've been watching these thick trails for several months now. I live in Tampa, Fl and we definitely get the criss-crossing patterns here and the big X's laid out in clear skies. If you watch you can see planes emitting these trails, which never fade but that gradually disperse into the atmosphere, evetually resembling haze or wispy clouds. You also see typical contrails, which quickly evaporate from behind the jets. I'm waiting to hear a logical explanation for the difference.

Remember, clouds are water vapour, and they're white. (Sometimes they appear grey, if they are thick enough to block sunlight.) As you may remember, the sun appears reddish and sunrise and sunset, due to refraction of light in the Earth's atmosphere. Thus, clouds or contrails can appear to be a pinkish colour.
