Feb 5, 2008 - Very clear sound on this recording, and we can see his fingering for the altissimo notes. Great video.

Mar 8, 2008 - Isn't this the same version as on "John Coltrane Live In Sweden 1961/63"?

Apr 11, 2008 - This is a song he wrote for his wife. For such a wonder song to be written about someone, his wife must have been one very special woman:)

May 9, 2008 - yes she loved him, support him, pray for him at every moments, the highests and the lowests, especially the hardests

jarbon5 Says:

May 10, 2008 - Well, let me change what I said about his wife. She was a special part of his life and a wonderful woman, the inspiration for such a beautiful song. In a way, that is the beauty of this song, at least, to me:)

Jun 3, 2008 - if 1 only ever wrote this single piece of music, you could never be forgotten. not sure if this is his best piece ever, but no doubt he remains a giant for this and other works. this piece simply moves me to tears and is hard to remove from my thoughts ever after many years.

Jun 5, 2008 - Wow. Excellent performance. Thanks for sharing!

Jun 6, 2008 - His first wife... anyway, Wise One was also supposedly written for Naima. I love Trane but after all Naima did for him, helping him kick junk and all that, one wonders what went wrong with them. It's very strange. Trane also had a mistress at the time. He had Naima, Alice and this unidentified white woman running all at the same time. Wild. Seems to contradict a lot of what he was supposed to be about. I still love his music though.

Jun 7, 2008 - Never knew all of that, and it's rather disturbing to hear (read). To hear that after all the hardships she helped him to deal with, that he would still mess around on her is kinda shocking, at least to me. However, his music is unscathed by his misdeeds and will always stand as beautiful jazz classics despite of:)

Jul 27, 2008 - As Tammy Wyntte would say "after all he's just a man"... lol, but seriously lets not make morals a compliment of talent.

islezeus Says:

Jul 27, 2008 - Someone told me that Wayne Shorter wrote 'Infant Eyes' as a homage to this song, 'Naima'. Is this true?

elsegno Says:

Aug 5, 2008 - Esta canción está llena de magia y amor.

philburrell Says:

Aug 8, 2008 - it was no accident that a lot of the greats were addicted and had other women. The gov't played a part in a lot of that. Muscians were considered free thinkers and non-conformists. Monk and trane had white women to supply them with their addictive substances. Makes you want to say ummm?

UNKLEREMUSS Says:

Sep 29, 2008 - I'm not attacking your credibility, but I kinda want to know where you heard that stuff. I know he met Alice and things went south w/ Naima, but according to C. O. Simpkins' biography, Naima, who contributed a lot to the biography in the way of photos and information, wasn't bitter and they remained friends. Coltrane apparently called her when he got the idea for "A Love Supreme" when he was already with Alice. I have never heard ANYTHING about a mistress.
