I love Trane but after all Naima did for him, helping him kick junk and all that, one wonders what went wrong with them. It's very strange. Trane also had a mistress at the time. He had Naima, Alice and this unidentified white woman running all at the same time. Wild. Seems to contradict a lot of what he was supposed to be about. I still love his music though.

To hear that after all the hardships she helped him to deal with, that he would still mess around on her is kinda shocking, at least to me. Simpkins' biography, Naima, who contributed a lot to the biography in the way of photos and information, wasn't bitter and they remained friends. Coltrane apparently called her when he got the idea for "A Love Supreme" when he was already with Alice. I have never heard ANYTHING about a mistress.
